Prince William appeared to have shown a subtle support for his estranged brother Prince Harry, as he received backlash over flying on a private jet with wife Meghan Markle.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex flew over 4,000 miles from New Jersey to Canouan after attending a summit in New York on October 10.
A spokesperson for The Kensington Palace issued a statement about the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards in November, for which William will be flying to without his wife, Kate Middleton.
“The Eartshot Prize is about finding innovative solutions that are going to help scale and change the future direction of [the] planet, and what he or the Earthshot Prize will never do, is tell people not to get on planes and not to get in their cars,” the rep said.
“We’re not looking back to the Ice Age, we’re looking forward to the Green Age. It’s really important that instead of focusing on prevention, we can actually focus on the opportunity.”
Prince William’s estranged brother has often been criticised for talking about climate change and yet not following through with his word on it.
In 2019, Harry said that he spends “99 per cent of [his] life travelling the world by commercial” but “occasionally there needs to be an opportunity [to fly privately] based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe – it’s as simple as that.”
He added, “For me, it’s about balance. It’s not a decision I would want to take, but if I have to do that, I will ensure that I balance out the impact that I have.”
The statement comes amid speculation that William is growing a soft spot for his brother as he contemplated reconciliation.
A source told Us Weekly that the Prince of Wales wants his relationship to improve despite them “not speaking terms.”
